Playing My Mom’s Game

When I was a kid my mom would always play Bingo on Friday night…and she would also get teased mercilessly for her old lady Bingo habit from both me and my older sister….

Because only old ladies with gray hair and a endless supply of good luck trolls play Bingo, right?

Carrying the Bingo bag complete with dozens of multi colored daubers and extra packs of cigarettes, right?

And of course, depending on my mom’s mood when she walked in the door we could always tell if she won big or if she was waiting waiting waiting…B6 anyone?

What a miserable time I would always tell her…

Why on Earth would anyone want to sit there for hours waiting to maybe¬†win? There was no way I would ever ever ever play Bingo…no way ever…

Until she finally dragged me along with her, huffing and puffing the whole time for sure…because this modern gal? Was not about to enjoy herself….Bingo? So for old people…

Until the purple dauber made it’s way into my hand and I became a Bingo maniac….

Cigarette dangling out of the corner of my mouth my butt was practically hanging off of the chair in anticipation and my mother had to keep whispering at me to keep my cool, that swearing at the attendants would get us kicked out, a shame she could never live with…

I must have been high off the dozens of daubers that surrounded me, but after a few games I wasn’t happy with just the paper games, I upped my chances of winning and got an electronic machine…

Oh yes I did…

And so for four hours I sat and I smoked, I daubed and I electrically entered the numbers called….

I sweated coffee and nicotine waiting waiting waiting for my number to be called….

Oh to win…sweet sweet victory…

If only I won I promised the Bingo Gods I would never ever ever tease my mother ever again…

I lost…after four hours of playing…

And so the teasing commenced…sorry Mom….

OMG – you just described my GRANDMA! I love it!!!! When I was a little kid, she used to let me make “art” with her daubers (I never knew how to spell that word – thanks for teaching me something new today, Holly). A few years back, my friends and I decided to go play bingo (it seemed like a GREAT idea after a few mango margaritas) and I could not believe how different it was. They use electronic machines! I could not keep up. It was frustrating. I haven’t been back. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face and reminding me of my late Grandma :-)

  2. I used to go with another mom when our kids were in Kindergarten. I mean what else can you do for 21/2 hours, right? I had so much fun. I never won a darn thing, but it was fun!

Your Mom was probably just happy to get out of the house, right?

Electronic machines? Hmmm, I think I might know what to get my mother in law for Christmas. She is there three times a week every week (it makes her too busy to come visit us, no lie). I’ve never been to “real” bingo, but I can only imagine….

So when are you going back?
