For the past couple of weeks I’ve been reading blog posts and Facebook status updates about how people are so excited because their kids are super thrilled to take an angel off of the tree and buy a present for another kid…
If not the Angel Tree then the Operation Christmas Child thing…
Apparently giving to children less fortunate make these little hearts sing with joy…
Children are passing out in joy at the idea of making another kid’s holiday fabulous…
Every kid but my own that is…
Every year I donate to our local battered women’s shelter and do the Angel Tree also…but this year I decided to involve my kids…
Wow…bad idea…
Mom, I don’t get it. Says Blake. Why are we buying stuff for other families?
Because there are people that aren’t as lucky as us. Some families don’t have enough money for presents or even enough food. That’s why we always donate during the holidays. Doesn’t it make you happy to help other kids?!
Why don’t they have any money? Asks Hope…
Well sweetie, some people aren’t able to find a job or the job they have doesn’t pay them a super lot of money, so for extra things like gifts other people help out…
Hmph! Says Blake, Their dads should just work harder, like Daddy-
But Blake-
Sometimes Daddy works so hard we don’t even see him that day, and now we have to share our money because our dad works hard? Says my little Republican….
Okay…time for a new tactic….
Well, I say, we also help out kids who don’t have both of their parents, like maybe they’re divorced or someones mom or dad died so they don’t have a lot of money because the mom can only work while the kids are in school.
Oh, says Blake, Well that’s different then. We can help those families. It’s really sad not to have a mom and dad.
Just to be on the safe side though, I’ll drop off the gifts without the kids in tow, I don’t need Blake giving a lecture about working harder to those in need…
Are your kids bastards* or are they excited to help others?

Well, he does have a point in a way!
Good on you, Holly for doing this yearly!

ha! you’re the only one who said he kind of had a point! everyone else said how their kids were so amazing and giving!
Love your little republican
Depends on the day for mine, if she’s willing to give. Usually she has a meltdown if we get one of her friends a birthday gift that she wants. I’m not allowed to buy ‘good’ presents for them

My daughter was always willing to help out kids in need.

way to rub it in and make me feel shitty! ha!
This is so funny!I love how kids sometimes perceive things
Mine are happy and excited to give. Somehow, they want to help other kids. As long as that kid isn’t their sister.

isn’t that the truth? ah, sibling rivalry…
LOL…Well Blake did have a good point!! But ya, maybe you should leave the kids behind when you drop the gifts off! haha

right? who knows what they’ll say to those people!
Hopefully someday he will come to realize that working hard isn’t always enough. Lots of lower income people work very hard but the pay is crap… I know because my dad used to work a lot (including holidays) yet we could barely make ends meet when I was little. But yay for donating and trying to help others – I was one of those kids that was on the tree back in the day.
I’m thinking about taking the older ones to go volunteer one day to actually see what it looks like to be needy…they really just have no idea how that can be, and why someone can’t just work harder…
You forgot to mention people with disabilities who just CAN’T work harder. I do totally see the humor in this, tho, and do not think your kids are actually bastards!

the disability angle, I can’t believe I forgot that! Thanks for reminding me!
LOL Looks like I have three democrats here but Sapphire says she LOVES “MITT ROM-IN-KNEE” just to get a rise out of people.
Nathaniel would like to buy everyone a present and spend all of our ‘monies’ on it! No bastard here, yet.

LMAO @ your little Republican.
Mine did well helping me shop for Operation Christmas Child, but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t want things for themselves. And they don’t get why we would need to buy things for others when Santa can just do it.

Ugh, mine asked why Santa didn’t take care of them…I said a lot of the kids didn’t have homes so Santa wasn’t sure where to go…
my kids are exactly like that Holly, don’t feel bad. What can we do but keep trying, hell I have friends who think like that! the truth is you probably have hundreds of friends on FB and 99% of them have kids like us but the few who don’t post all the time about the generosity of their kids and make us feel all bad
, or they just lie.
xoxo, Stacy
let’s go with liars! all of them! ha!
Well, technically, they have a dad, so they are not really “bastards” as I once pointed out to my ex during a fight in which I actually said, “No wait, you have a dad, you aren’t a “bastard”, you are a son of a bi&ch!” We were in the process of splitting up and I never did like my MIL so I was kind of proud of that statement!
But I think it’s good that kids don’t just blindly follow…that they ask questions and work it out in their own minds… really, I do, as long as it doesn’t interfere with my plans!

my kids are a bit older (13) we have always (since before they can remember) done the Christmas tree thing so they have always been ok with it…. however i have the opposite problem they want to give everything and dont really care about opening gifts seriously Christmas morning they will wake up, eat breakfast, then let us (parents) open our gifts then they will open theirs!
wow…my kids would get us out of bed at 3 am to open gifts if we let them…lucky!
I love your description: “my little republican”…that just cracked me up.
